ArtPride shares statewide success with regional chamber and local groups

On November 5, 2025, nonprofit leaders from across Ocean County gathered at the Stockton Manahawkin Campus for the Fall Nonprofit Forum, an annual event hosted by the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce. This year’s forum, themed “Advocacy 101,” focused on equipping nonprofit professionals and volunteers with the tools and strategies needed to effectively advocate for their missions. With more than a decade of free programming behind it, the Chamber’s nonprofit forum continues to serve as a vital resource for organizations seeking to expand their impact through education and collaboration.

The centerpiece of the morning was a dynamic presentation by ArtPride New Jersey’s Advocacy Team, featuring Vince Hall, Director of Advocacy Operations, and Vanessa Ramalho, Director of External Relations. Their session introduced attendees to ArtPride’s Advocacy Toolkit, a comprehensive resource designed to help nonprofits navigate the complexities of advocacy work. The toolkit provides guidance on distinguishing between advocacy and lobbying, clarifying legal boundaries while offering strategic approaches to both. It also includes practical advice for engaging stakeholders and legislators, building relationships, and communicating effectively to advance organizational goals.

Hall and Ramalho emphasized the importance of activating community support, encouraging nonprofits to mobilize volunteers, donors, and constituents in collective action. They also highlighted the power of storytelling and data in crafting compelling messages that influence policy and funding decisions. Throughout the presentation, the team shared real-world case studies demonstrating how arts organizations have successfully secured funding and policy support through strategic advocacy efforts.

One of the key takeaways from the session was the distinction between advocacy and lobbying. Advocacy, they explained, centers on education and raising awareness, while lobbying involves direct efforts to influence legislation. Understanding this difference is essential for nonprofits to remain compliant while maximizing their influence. The presenters also underscored the power of grassroots movements, showing how local voices can shape statewide and national policy when coordinated through campaigns and coalitions.

ArtPride’s team showcased digital tools that nonprofits can use to contact legislators, track bills, and share impact stories. These platforms make it easier for organizations to stay informed and engaged in the legislative process. The forum concluded with a renewed sense of purpose among attendees, who left with actionable insights and a deeper understanding of how to advocate effectively for their causes.

By empowering nonprofits with the knowledge and tools to influence public policy, the organization reminded everyone in attendance that their voices matter—and that collective action can lead to meaningful change in communities across the state. The Southern Ocean Chamber partners with the Ocean County Culture & Heritage, Southern Ocean Chamber Association and Stockton Manahawkin to make these valuable events available three times per year.
