Understanding New Jersey’s Earned Sick Leave Law for Small Business

Chamber News

The law covers full-time, part-time, and temporary employees working in the state

Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce would like to share new Earned Sicked Leave Law. In New Jersey, the Earned Sick Leave Law applies to businesses of all sizes, ensuring that most employees have access to paid sick time when they need it. Keeping up with employment regulations can be challenging, but understanding this law helps both employers and employees create a healthier and more productive workplace. Under the law, eligible employees earn one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 40 hours per year. The law covers full-time, part-time, and temporary employees working in New Jersey.

Employees may use earned sick leave for a variety of reasons, including caring for their own physical or mental health, caring for a family member, attending certain school-related meetings, or addressing situations involving domestic or sexual violence. Sick leave may also be used during certain public health emergencies. Employers are required to provide eligible employees with information about their earned sick leave rights and must comply with the law’s recordkeeping and leave requirements. Existing paid time off policies may satisfy the law if they meet or exceed its requirements.
