The Southern Ocean Chamber Association was proud to support a collaborative workshop held at the Mainland Manahawkin addressing the significant food insecurity specifically in the towns of Southern Ocean County. Key stakeholders including The Citta Foundation, Hackensack Meridian Health Southern Ocean Medical Center, OceanFirst Bank, Causeway Cares, United Way of Monmouth & Ocean Counties, as well as our organization, joined hosts Fulfill and the Grunin Foundation in discussing the food bank's recent Service Area Assessment. Fulfill’s assessment found food insecurity rising across both counties, affecting more than 131,000 residents, with Southern Ocean County experiencing higher rates. 

The workshop that brought together over one hundred local leaders from government, business, nonprofits and community institutions, centered around action, providing access not just the availability of food. Discussion recognized service gaps, need for expanding pantry locations and distribution hours, transportation challenges and rural or isolated seasonal neighborhoods. This event also underscored the importance of building resiliency across our coastal communities. Southern Ocean County faces unique challenges—from seasonal workforce fluctuations to storm‑related disruptions—that can intensify food insecurity when support systems are strained.
