Stay Safe During Extreme Summer Heat
Stay Safe During Extreme Summer Heat
Simple Steps Can Make A Difference
As temperatures soar across the shore, the Southern Ocean Chamber is sharing important guidance from the Ocean County Health Department to help residents protect themselves, their families, and their neighbors from dangerous heat-related illnesses. Extreme heat remains one of the leading weather‑related health hazards in the United States. The CDC reports more than 700 heat‑related deaths each year, with thousands more requiring emergency medical care.
Heat Safety Tips Everyone Should Follow
Stay hydrated — Drink water regularly, even before you feel thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks and alcohol, which can worsen dehydration.
Stay cool — Spend time in air‑conditioned spaces. If your home isn’t cooled, visit a library, mall, or local cooling center.
Limit outdoor activity — Schedule strenuous work or exercise for early morning or evening hours.
Dress for the weather — Choose lightweight, loose‑fitting, light‑colored clothing.
Check on others — Older adults, young children, and people with chronic conditions are at higher risk.
Never leave children or pets in vehicles — Temperatures inside a parked car can become deadly within minutes.
Know the warning signs —
Heat exhaustion: dizziness, heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, headache, muscle cramps
Heat stroke: confusion, fainting, or a body temperature above 103°F — call 911 immediately
Protect your pets — Ensure they have water, shade, and avoid hot pavement that can burn paws.
