How On‑the‑Job Training helps businesses grow talent and gives residents real opportunities to advance

New Jersey’s On‑the‑Job Training (OJT) program is more than a hiring incentive—it’s a powerful bridge between local employers who need skilled talent and jobseekers who need real, paid opportunities to grow. By pairing hands‑on training with wage reimbursement, OJT strengthens the workforce while helping residents build sustainable careers. For businesses, this program reduces the cost of training new hires while ensuring workers learn exactly what the job requires. Employers receive reimbursement for part of the employee’s wages during the training period—up to 50% of straight‑time wages, potentially totaling as much as $10,000 per employee.

Employers benefit from:

Wage reimbursement to offset training costs

Customized training plans built around real skill gaps

Support from OJT specialists during hiring and contract development

Free job postings through the National Labor Exchange (NLx)

To participate, employers must offer a full‑time, permanent position, pay at least $1 above minimum wage, and have an approved training plan that goes beyond standard onboarding.

What On the Job Training Offers Job Seekers:

This program gives eligible New Jersey residents the chance to earn while they learn, gaining practical experience in a real workplace. Participants are hired directly by an employer and trained in the specific skills needed to succeed in the role. When training is completed successfully, they transition into long‑term employment.

Key advantages include:

Earn while you learn — receive a paycheck from day one

Skill‑gap training — hands‑on learning tailored to what the employer needs

Long‑term employment pathway — successful trainees are retained as regular employees

Competitive advantage — ideal for jobseekers needing new or updated skills

Support throughout training — guidance from workforce specialists during the entire process
